Fethiye differs from other Turkish coastal towns due to the fact that there are no multi-storey buildings here and therefore the city still has the small urban character. Fethiye is for the farmers from the fruit growing region which is the most important purchase and supply centre. From here around the clock bus connections exist to all important cities of the country (Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya, ect). The famous white sandy beaches of Ölüdeniz with its blue lagoon are located in a bay approximately 14 kilometres from the town centre; with a ten month season. At the eastern end of this bay surrounded by mountains the Baba Dagi ("Father Mountain") with its 1,969m rising from the sea. Fethiye does not offer bathing possibilities in the sea.

Beside the small restaurant port is the busy Marina, which is used by sailors glad of a winter mooring, as well as several dive locations. From the sea-promenade it is possible to take ferry trips.

Scattered over the town centre are still some Lycian and Roman Sarkophage in situ. (One is located in a populated area even in the middle of the road. Others are included into the walls of the houses or serve - on their sides - as chicken houses).
