The name of the city means "Four Hung architects". This name came about from the time of the construction of the castle. The Sultan then ordered his four architects to build a castle which could be seen in Rhodes. The result was a relatively small castle, this made the Sultan very angry, and he hung them at the gallows. It is not known when Marmaris was founded, but in the 6th century BC the city was known as Physkos.


Marmaris is located on the Turkish Aegean coast on the peninsula Bozburun. The nearest airport is located at Dalaman and is 120 km away.


But there are also much quieter places close by. The promenade is about 11 km long and is well looked after with all its green areas. The beach s between 10 to 15 metres wide and consists of fine sandy beaches. Because of the cities location on the Aegean coast, Marmaris is a significant tourist destination. The city lies in a large sheltered bay; this has created a natural harbour used by both commercial shipping and the recreational sailor in their cruisers and yachts. In the large harbour you can expect to see large cruise ships like the "Aida Cara". There are two large Marinas and a few smaller ones also. Each year about a hundred skippers will stay and winter here. Also from Marmaris ferries will travel to the Greek island of Rhodes which can be seen from the city.
